Dr. Katz on Abuse

Original commentary published on Feb 11, 2013 on Youtube

*Writing in Italics are comments by Fern

Jackson Katz, Phd, is an anti-sexist activist and expert on violence, media and masculinities. An author, filmmaker, educator and social theorist, Katz has worked in gender violence prevention work with diverse groups of men and boys in sports culture and the military, and has pioneered work in critical media literacy.Katz is the creator and co-founder of the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program, which advocates the “bystander approach” to sexual and domestic violence prevention. You’ve also may have seen him in the award winning documentary “MissRepresentation.”  * (If not, put it on your must-see list.)

*This TED talk is a comprehensive look at prevention of emotional, physical, sexual, gender and racial abuses. By focusing on how these issues really start, Dr. Katz is putting forth his ideas on how they should be handled.

*The video is well worth the 19 minutes of your time it takes to view. During it I shouted, “Yes!” several times with appreciation of the intelligent analysis of this difficult subject. If in the audience, I would certainly have given Dr. Katz a rallying stand-up ovation.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.**

This Just Rocks…

A guy pulled over to take a picture of an American Woodcock, then noticed the bird dancing across the road in perfect rhythm to the song on his car’s stereo (Daft Punk’s ‘Something About Us’).

If you needed something to make you smile today – I hope this did the trick!
